Genre Recipe Activity

Genre Recipe Activity
Making, a genre movie is like baking, a favourite cake. You get hold of the recipe, find out the ingredients, and mix them all together. If you want to be sure that everyone enjoys it, don't change the recipe too much ; you might add a few extra cherries or a dash of something, just to make it slightly different, but  you're not going to risk making any major or changes to what has always worked in the past.
Recipe for one 8 inch FRUIT CAKE
Ingredients
6 oz soft margarine
6 oz soft brown sugar
3 eggs
1 tablespoon black treacle
4 oz glace cherries 4 oz sultanas
4 oz raisins
8 oz self-raising flour
1 teaspoon mixed spice
Instructions/Method
Grease a deep (8 inch) round cake tin and line the base and sides with a double layer of greased greaseproof paper. Place all the Ingredients in the mixer bowl and beat on slowest speed until combined. Increase to medium speed and beat for 30 seconds. Turn into the cake tin and place in a preheated moderate oven, gas mark 3, for 1 1/2 to 13/4 hours, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave in the tin for five minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool.
If you're going to make a genre movie, you also need to follow a recipe. You have to use the right ingredients, and you have to mix them up correctly. Unfortunately, there aren't any Jamie Oliver, or Masterchef genre recipe books available which list the exact ingredients needed to make a Western, Horror or Disaster movie etc; so film-makers, producers, directors and writers have to rely on their knowledge of similar films which have been made in the past.
On the left-hand side, list the essential ingredients of a particular genre.
On the right-hand side, explain how they should all be put
together – in other words, describe the typical rules for the PLOT.

Recipe for one Private Investigator Film
Ingredients
1 private detective (private eye)
1 raincoat (collar turned up)
1 hat (for shielding eyes)
1 dingy private eye's office
1 hand-gun
1 beautiful and mysterious woman
1 female night-club singer
1 fat and ruthless nightclub owner
2 ugly henchmen
1 weary police officer
several corpses
several large (black) cars
1 busy and unfriendly city several flashing neon signs
1 skyscraper rooftop
1 deserted house
Instructions/Method
Take one beautiful and mysterious woman, make her turn up unexpectedly at the private eye’s office, in deep trouble and then make her disappear. While trying to find out what her problem is, make the private eye find a corpse, and have him get the blame for it. Now make him try to clear his name and arrange it so that his investigations lead him to a smoky basement nightclub. Make sure that he gets involved with a glamorous and tragic singer, who gets murdered. Now make him confront the crooked nightclub owner, whose henchmen beat him up and lock him up in a deserted house, miles from anywhere. After a certain amount of bloodshed, let him escape. He should discover that the beautiful and mysterious woman is involved with the nightclub owner – but it should turn out that this is not her fault (perhaps she is being blackmailed, or her father has been kidnapped). Let the private eye find out what has been going on, kill the nightclub owner, rescue the girl, solve her problems, and – if you want a happy ending – you'd better make sure that they fall in love.
