REFLECTION

Media Arts: Short Film Production – Term 02 2013
Pre-Production and Production Reflection/evaluation:

Respond to each of the following dot points (using complete sentences or paragraphs).
You should include as much detail as possible in your responses.

Teamwork during Pre-Production:
·      Describe any problems or difficulties your group encountered while developing your plot, concept and characters;
The problems and difficulties our group encountered while developing our plot, concept and characters was we didn’t use time management very efficiently, we wasted to much time at the start planning the story while we should have been able to do it all in one creative media lesson. We also all took a long time to decide on our final idea and stuffed around trying to change the plot and create the characters.

·      Explain whether your group effectively used the pre-production and planning templates to help refine each idea prior to filming;
Our group effectively used the pre-production and planning templates to a great extent to help us refine each of our ideas prior to filming; this included the shot list, prop list, availability list and our concept ideas. Without these tools and the little time we had to make the production it would have been impossible to complete. They really helped us

·      Describe whether your group made effective use of their time in class during pre-production. (Did each group member; contribute; have set tasks at all times; know their role in the group etc.)
My group didn’t make effective use of our time in class during pre-production, by the time it was to start shooting we needed a whole other lesson just to plan while the rest of the class was filming. At the time we didn’t realize how fast the project had to be filmed by until we found our selves having to take planning home and completing so we were able to film. In summation our group could have made the film more efficient by using our time given in class, in result having the task done with no rush.

·      List some steps your group could (or did) implement to improve in this area;
To improve in this area our group could be more careful with our time we have and plan out what needs to be done each lesson.

Teamwork during Production:
·      Discuss how your group used storyboards, shot-lists, prop-lists and a shooting schedule to assist during the filming and decision making process;
Using storyboards, shot-lists, prop-lists and a shooting schedule (availability) assisted our group during the filming and decision making process of completing the filming. We used these documents to help the organization of the producing, without these tools our group wouldn’t have been able to submit our film to Mr. Andrews on time. We mainly used the shot list helping us know what shot to film next angle and where.

·      Discuss whether you made effective use of the provided templates (EDL and Sound Design) to assist in the editing and decision making process;
Our group didn’t use the provided templates of EDL and Sound design to assist in the editing and decision making process as we had run out of time to do a prefect edit, we had time to only place the scenes into order and add a few sound effects from garage band.

·      Did your group experience any organizational issues during filming, (i.e. members who were absent or did not contribute; finding suitable times to film; forgetting shot-lists, costumes; not booking equipment etc.) How did you manage or work around these difficulties?
We did experience quite a few organizational issues during filming such as when the planned characters had to be changed because Makenzie absent/sick, we needed to make Lily our kid. We also had difficulty finding suitable times to film as well all were busy during afternoons and the one weekend we had I was away in Sydney, although we did seem to finish the project just in time. Another organizational issue was that we were suppose to have the kid get kidnapped and pushed into a van, but we didn’t book in with Mr. Andrews on time. To work around this we just changed a bit of the film and made it so as Lily went unconscious it went to the basement

·      Did your group complete all shots as detailed in your planning?
No our group didn’t complete all of the shots as detailed in planning because of the organizational issue of the van not being booked on time, for Mr. Andrews to organize it.

Discuss your individual feelings about the rough edit:
·      Are you group satisfied with the final result?
Our group is satisfied with the final result, we just all know that know we need to edit it a lot more, but we are proud of our film and know that once it is fully edited it will be even better.

·      Does the rough edit meet the time requirements for this task? If not, describe why? (i.e did you expect it would be longer? is it incomplete? etc.)
Yes our film does meet the time requirements for this task, it ended up being 4 minutes 6 seconds, which we were very happy about.

·      Does your film require additional scenes, or reshoots?
Yes our film does need reshoots, not as many additional scenes, we need to reshoot a couple of shots because it is either not focused or a few of ours you can see unwanted props in the corner of the shots.

·      Would like to change any aspects of your film?
I think I would like to change the aspect of editing when Lily and I are in the reeves stairway because it is a bit repetitive and I think viewers would find it a bit confusing on to what is really happening.

·      If you could start the project again what would you do differently?
If I could start the project again the features I would do differently is some shots where we are either not serious or the shot isn’t stabled properly, the way the film is set out and the shot when I hit Lily with the hockey stick it doesn’t touch Lily’s head so it makes it look really ridiculous.

·      Did planning and filming take more or less time than you anticipated? Define why?
Planning good to help the filming process took a lot more time than we all expected. This is because we had never really made such a large shot list for a film before and didn’t realize how much work you have to put in to make a great film.
Consider whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection to throughout your project. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Does the work on your blog/journal represent 5 weeks’ worth of work)
This term I haven’t undertook adequate and detailed reflections throughout my project, which doesn’t really provide enough evidence to support my work.  The work on my blog doesn’t represent five weeks worth of work, I have really stepped down from last terms work, and have disappointed my self that Mr. Andrews had to stand up and tell the class I received a D. I will be a lot more efficient with my blog reflections on the tasks done in class next term and to fix this problem I will be doing at least half an hour a week of reflections for creative media.
